Project Spotlight: kitconway.com

kit conway author website

Oh my goodness I love this website! And I know that sounds a bit boastful of me, but WOULD YOU LOOK AT IT!? It’s such a fab experience when an author has a book with a really distinctive hook, theme and cover that just all come together so perfectly.

The Brief

I have known Kit for a few years as we once shared a publisher (when she was writing under a different name) so I was so happy when she came to me to enquire about me building a website for her new novel - which had sold in the US too!

Best of all I absolutely loved the concept for the book (what a title, right?!) - Tiger King meets Big Little Lies! And when I saw Kit’s covers I was even happier.

Kit wanted big and bold and had very definite ideas for her website which really helped. As did her gorgeous photography. If you can invest in some proper professional author photos, it really does make all the difference.

I was especially keen to make use of the graphics from her US cover - the tiger paw was a super fun one to include, and we kept things colourful too, using lots of accent colours throughout to add some zest.

Kit had some fantastic pre-publication quotes too, so we went big and bold with the font for those to help them pop.

This was such a fun creative author website to work on, and I really love what we ended up with!

The Post-launch Q&A

How do you feel about your completed website?

I love it! It's exactly what I wanted: bold, playful and a useful hub for information on my latest book, Cat Fight, and future books.

Before working with Charlotte Duckworth Studio, when it came to my website I felt …

Like it was something I should have but overwhelmed whenever I looked into setting one up. Every now and then I would do some research, get confused by all the different options, and resolve to think about it another time! As I was coming up to publication of Cat Fight this year however, the niggling grew louder and so I did what I should have done a few years ago and booked a space with the Charlotte Duckworth Studio!

What fears or hesitations did you have before deciding to work with Charlotte Duckworth Studio?

I was hesitant to have a website built because of the cost. I knew Charlotte was excellent from her previous work and feedback I'd heard from other authors but I was still worried that having a website was an unnecessary expense. Now that I have it though I think the cost is worth it. Not only because Charlotte's process is comprehensive and seamless - and entirely takes the pain out of the process for someone like me who is not very tech proficient! - but it's also been really helpful during publication to have one place with all the information about Cat Fight on there to direct people to, whether they're in the UK or the US.

How do you expect your new site to change things for you?

I'm really keen to use it as a platform to increase my newsletter subscribers and, in turn, to build a writing community. While it's long been accepted that an author newsletter is a good idea I feel like it's becoming more important than ever - given the mysterious, unfathomable algorithms at play across social media and the transient nature of the platforms (thinking of Twitter) - to have a way of communicating with readers which is within your control. While a website isn't essential to build a newsletter I think it helps to anchor what is essentially your author brand in one place.

For someone on the fence about working with Charlotte Duckworth Studio, what would you say to them?

I would say go for it. I only wish I'd done it sooner as the studio is in demand and I had to wait a while for a slot to come up. It's a big expense but it's also an investment worth doing.

How do you feel about your completed website?

I think it's brilliant. It looks great, it's got everything I (and readers) need on there and it's easy to update to keep it relevant.

Is there anything you feel could have been done to improve your experience?

No! I wish I'd made an earlier start on pulling all the info together but that's totally on me, not you!

Would you recommend Charlotte Duckworth Studio to a friend who also needed to build an author website?

100%. They're the best.
